My Journey
My journey began when my son received a diagnosis of dyslexia. My first thought was – what do I do now to help him? Unfortunately living in a regional area we don’t always have direct access to specialists. So being a qualified teacher I set out to upskill myself and learn as much as I possibly could to help him. This has meant many trips to Perth for training in recognised programs from the Dyslexia SPELD Foundation.
It is from them that I have attained the recognised qualifications to be a tutor of children with dyslexia. I use a program called Sounds-Write. It is a linguistic phonics program that starts from what children already know. It is based on teaching the conceptual and factual knowledge, on which the English alphabet code is based and the three skills needed to enable learners to use our code effectively. These are blending, segmenting and phoneme manipulation.
The program is a sequentially systematic, multisensory and explicitly taught program. In my sixteen years of teaching it has truly been the most eye opening learning experience of my career. I wish I had been taught this at university. It makes so much practical sense.
The majority of children will learn to read without any problems but then there are some, that for some reason, it just doesn’t come easy. Not all of those children will have dyslexia. There may be environmental factors, have had trauma in their lives, constant ear infections, ineffective teaching to account for the deficit in reading ability.
This program will target all of those children in need. They do not need to be dyslexic but rather just need to be taught differently and effectively.
So if your child is struggling to grasp the understanding of reading, writing or spelling then this program is for them. I look forward to hearing from you and helping your child/children.
